Applauding New York State Bar Association

NACDL applauds the work of the New York State Bar Association and urges that the New York State Bar Association continue to support indigent defense reform efforts in New York.

WHEREAS in a resolution dated February 21, 2004, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) pledged to support all lawful efforts by the Bar and the public to influence the states in fulfilling their right to counsel;

WHEREAS the New York State Bar Association’s Special Committee to Ensure Quality of Mandated Representation has drafted Standards for Providing Mandated Representation;

WHEREAS, the New York State Bar Association approved the Standards for Providing Mandated Representation at its meeting on April 2, 2005;

WHEREAS the Standards, if adopted in New York, could improve significantly the quality of representation received by indigent accused individuals in New York;

It is hereby resolved that NACDL applauds the work of the New York State Bar Association and urges that the New York State Bar Association continue to support indigent defense reform efforts in New York.
