Johnna Carey is NACDL’s Resource Counsel. She manages and maintains the NACDL Resource Center, which includes providing technical and substantive support to NACDL’s members. Johnna also works with NACDL Senior Resource Counsel Vanessa Antoun to support NACDL’s work in the postconviction area.

Prior to joining NACDL, Johnna worked in several capacities in criminal defense and criminal justice reform. Following an internship with South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense in the Capital Trial Division, Johnna was a Clemency Fellow in the American Bar Association’s Death Penalty Representation Project, creating state-by-state resources for capital defense practitioners. She then worked with the Capital Litigation Communications Project. Most recently, Johnna served incarcerated DC residents with mental illness and intellectual disabilities at the DC Jail and Prison Advocacy Project, a federally-designated protection and advocacy program for people with disabilities in DC and part of University Legal Services. Johnna is a graduate of Transylvania University and the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where she was a Managing Editor of the Indiana Law Journal and received the Terry and Judy Albright Pro Bono and Public Interest Award, an award recognizing significant contribution through pro bono and public interest service.
