Ultimate False Confessions (2017)
CLE Credit Hours: Up to 3 hours of self-study CLE credit, where authorized. Please confirm with your state's CLE commission to ensure this program is available for self-study CLE certification.
Program Summary: It’s difficult for the public (i.e. jurors) to understand how and why false confessions occur. This program is designed to help criminal defense lawyers understand the science behind false confessions, and how to persuasively argue against the validity of these confessions in court. You will learn about coercive police interrogation techniques (Reid technique), and how these real-world police tactics can easily induce a false confession. A taxonomy of false confessions will also be presented, as well as empirical findings demonstrating the impact of police interrogation techniques on eliciting false confessions. Lastly, you will learn about the additional considerations that affect defending mentally ill and developmentally disabled clients, and how to better represent these vulnerable populations in court.
