A Burning Question - The Scientific Method in Arson Investigations (2018)
CLE Credit Hours: Up to 2 hours of self-study CLE credit, where authorized. Please confirm with your state's CLE commission to ensure this program is available for self-study CLE certification.
Program Summary: This special compilation contains two of NACDL's highest-rated presentations on Arson Investigations from recent CLE seminars. These programs will explore the forensic and cognitive missteps in the surprisingly common and ongoing misidentification of an accidental fire as an act of arson, and its horrible consequences. Criminal defense practitioners will learn to identify the unreliable, unmeasured, quasi-scientific techniques in use by today’s fire investigators to identify and misidentify a fire’s origin and cause, as well as show that the myths of the past have been replaced but not rejected – changing the process, but maintaining the result. The world of fire investigation has moved beyond the mythology that was used to convict and execute Todd Willingham. These presentations will tell you just where it has gone.

1. Arson Investigation & The Souliotes Case | John Lentini
2. A Burning Question: Applying the Scientific Method in Fire Investigation | Paul Bieber & Len Walker
