Interviewing and Cross-Examining Child Witnesses (2017)
CLE Credit: Up to 4 hours of self-study CLE credits, where authorized. Please confirm with your state's CLE commission to ensure this program is available for self-study CLE certification.
Program Summary: Cases involving child witnesses are some of the most difficult we face. These cases require specialized knowledge and training, and present unique challenges to the defense. This one-of-a-kind program will help you understand those challenges and how to address them in court. You will learn how to identify suggestive questioning in forensic child interviews and how they affect the testimony of a child, as well as what kind of questions are most effective when cross-examining children, including how their perceptions and recollections of time, distance, size and quantity differ from those of adults. Child development concepts and their impact on your case will also be addressed. Other topics covered include: best practices on communicating with children verbally and non-verbally, understanding the physical examination process in sexual assault cases, identifying interviewer and expert witness bias, pace and control of cross-examination questions and taint hearings.
