Deconstructing a DNA Case
CLE Credit: Up to 5 hours of self-study CLE credit, where authorized. Please confirm with your state's CLE commission to ensure this program is available for self-study CLE certification.
Program Summary: Understanding DNA evidence is difficult. You're an attorney, not a scientist. With the proper tools and training however, DNA evidence can be demystified, simplified...and deconstructed. This special 5-hour program will explain what you need to know when trying a DNA case, why you need to know it, and how to get the materials you need to win your trial. It will break down the DNA evidence commonly found in criminal cases in a clear, concise and lively fashion, and will guide you through a multitude of issues you will encounter while handling a DNA case.
You'll learn how crime labs collect DNA evidence, how to read lab reports, common errors that are made, biases and external influences that can affect forensic examiners, and how you can argue these issues persuasively in court. A detailed and precise breakdown of common discovery documents submitted in sexual assault cases will be covered, as well as how those materials can be erroneous or misleading. You will also be presented with a case example that will walk you through the trial of a case in which DNA was the primary evidence, and the practical courtroom tips and techniques that were used to discredit the DNA evidence presented before the jury. Lastly, this program will cover the ever-changing guidelines of the statistical analysis of DNA evidence, as well as the latest trends in complex mixtures analysis. Written materials to supplement the lectures are included.
