
The Science of the Mind: Litigating Mental Health in Criminal Cases (2024)
Program Summary: Experts estimate that between 55 and 75% of all incarcerated people suffer from mental health issues. Whether it is insanity, incompetence, or impairment; mental health issues affect bail decisions, sentencing, and the chance of winning at trial. Understanding the Science of the mind, how to decode potential defenses, untangle issues of competence, and being able to use all that information can be the key to successful representation of a client.
Experts in the sciences and the nation’s top litigators with extensive experience representing mentally disabled or affected clients are sharing their insights, knowledge, and understanding of mental health to assist you in helping your next client obtain a successful outcome.
This program will cover various aspects of mental health issues, ranging from competence to insanity defenses, jury selection and persuasion, and sentencing. You will learn how to get a jury to care about your client, how to effectively cross-examine a variety of experts, and mitigation at sentencing.
