Annual Affiliate Contact Update

It is that time of year! Recognizing that the local leadership and online presence of its affiliated organizations changes yearly, NACDL requests that all Affiliate executive directors and/or administrative staff please submit annual updates of relevant contact and website information before Aug. 1, 2013, so that NACDL has accurate information for local organizations in its annual member handbook. Each Affiliate should submit all updates, including the name of its 2013-2014 president, to NACDL’s Associate Executive Director for Programs Gerald Lippert at glippert@nacdl.org.

The New York Criminal Bar Association (NYCBA) recently held its Annual Awards Dinner at the Central Park Boathouse. Speakers and honorees included the Honorable Jonathan Lippmann, chief judge of the New York State Court of Appeals; the Honorable Analisa Torres, United States District Court judge, SDNY; and distinguished practitioner O.T. Swetz Elected as PACDL President

At its recent annual meeting, the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL) elected James A. Swetz as its new president. A Yonkers, N.Y., native and Villanova University School of Law cum laude graduate, Swetz helped found Cramer, Swetz & McManus, one of Monroe County’s largest law firms. Certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, he has defended many high-profile criminal cases in state and federal courts throughout northeastern Pennsylvania and was listed in Philadelphia Magazine as one of Pennsylvania’s top criminal defense lawyers in 2007 and 2009 through 2012.

WACDL Presents Annual Awards

The Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL) recently announced the recipients of its 2013 awards at its Annual Awards Dinner in Chelan. Mary Kay High received the esteemed William O. Douglas Award, which is given to recognize a pattern of extraordinary achievement, courage, and dedication in the practice of criminal law. George Bianchi and Robert Leen each received a 2013 President’s Award in recognition of achievement in a particular case or series of related cases, or longtime service to the criminal defense bar. Journalist Brendan Kiley was the recipient of WACDL’s 2013 Champion of Justice Award for having “gone above and beyond anything [we] typically see from the press.” Kiley wrote extensively about drug distribution, sentencing disparities and, most notably, several compelling stories on grand jury resisters who were jailed for failing to testify about other people’s political beliefs. The Champion of Justice Award recognizes an individual who — through legislative, judicial, journalistic, or humanitarian pursuits — has staunchly preserved or defended the constitutional rights of Washington residents and endeavored to ensure justice and due process for those accused of crime.
