How to Give

NACDL and the NFCJ work to reform the criminal justice system because of support from people like you.

Support NACDL Foundation for Criminal Justice

NACDL Foundation for Criminal Justice (NFCJ) assists the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) with resource development and the enhancement of its programs through the philanthropy of its membership, law firms, interested corporations and foundations, as well as the wider public. NFCJ also supports partnerships and other research projects that serve its mission - to create a more humane criminal justice system. The NFCJ is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Gifts of Stocks and Securities

Do you have appreciated stocks or securities? Want to avoid paying capital gains tax while making a charitable contribution? Donating appreciated stocks or securities directly to NACDL Foundation for Criminal Justice is an easy way to make a gift. You can receive a tax deduction and you can avoid capital gains taxes, too.

When transferring stocks or securities directly to the NFCJ, have your broker or financial advisor contact Farr Miller at (202)-530-5606.

You will receive an acknowledgment from the NFCJ when the transferred stocks are received indicating the mean stock value on the date the asset is transferred. Your financial advisor or accountant can provide you with information regarding the tax deductibility of this type of gift.

This method of giving is typically most appropriate with appreciated assets. If you have realized a loss on certain assets, sell those stocks or securities first. Always talk to your broker or financial advisor before making a gift of securities and find out what is best for you and your situation.

If you would prefer to physically deliver securities, please contact Tom Chambers at 202-465-7625.

Honoraria and Speaker Fees

Do you have an upcoming speaking engagement? Remember that donating your honoraria to the NFCJ is a simple way to support future initiatives. When asked, be sure to identify NACDL Foundation for Criminal Justice as the charity to which you would like your honoraria to be donated. Asking your host to make a donation to the Foundation in your honor not only supports the foundation, it also furthers awareness of the Foundation and its important work.

Book Royalties

Book royalties in full or in part can be donated to the NFCJ. This is a great way to not only support the Foundation's work but also to promote your book. Make a gift once you have received your royalties or make arrangements through your publisher to have a donation sent directly to NACDL Foundation for Criminal Justice. If you wish to make a gift equal to your royalty payment, be sure to tell your publisher, so your charitable support can be mentioned in the marketing of your book. For more information, contact the NFCJ staff.

Special note: Gifts of contributed honoraria or book royalties will be counted toward the donor's recognition total so that NFCJ can acknowledge your charitable intentions. All gifts, however, will be formally credited to the actual individual or entity making the contribution.

Estate Planning and Other Special Gifts

You can leave a lasting impact on NACDL's work in the criminal defense bar through a will, charitable trust or gift of insurance. The process is straightforward, your gift will benefit the NFCJ for years to come, and there may be tax advantages for you. There are many ways to create a planned gift through real estate, bequests, charitable remainder trusts and other gifts that provide both you and NFCJ with income.

Talk to your personal financial advisor to develop a plan that works best for you. Contact NFCJ staff for simple language that can be added to any will to ensure that NACDL Foundation for Criminal Justice is included in your basic estate plans.
