During the 2016 regular session, the New Mexico legislature considered HB 56, a bill to expand the list of offenses that trigger mandatory life imprisonment under the state’s “three strikes” law. NACDL issued a legislative action alert urging members to ask their State Senators to vote no on HB 56. NACDL conducted additional advocacy in partnership with the New Mexico Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (NMCDLA) and other sentencing reform organizations, including co-authoring an article in the Santa Fe New Mexican. Fortunately, the legislation failed to advance in the Senate.
