Authorizing Measures to Advance the Education and Training of Chinese Defense Lawyers

The International Affairs Committee shall explore contacts, initiated through, and perhaps funded by, the Ford Foundation, in China. These contacts should focus on fact-finding with respect to the Chinese criminal justice system, and especially the role of defense lawyers and defendants. .........

BE IT RESOLVED that the International Affairs Committee shall explore contacts, initiated through, and perhaps funded by, the Ford Foundation, in China. These contacts should focus on fact-finding with respect to the Chinese criminal justice system, and especially the role of defense lawyers and defendants.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that if the International Affairs Committee determines that NACDL could play a beneficial role in advancing the criminal defense aspects of Chinese jurisprudence, that the International Affairs Committee develop proposals to utilize NACDL members to advance the education and training of Chinese criminal defense lawyers, as well as to establish contacts with our counterparts in China.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all costs associated with this effort be funded through non-NACDL sources.

    The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) remains deeply concerned over recent executive orders targeting law firms, most recently Paul Weiss and Perkins Coie, and repeats its call to uphold the right to counsel and the independence of the legal profession. Despite a ruling blocking the action against Perkins Coie, the administration has continued to target law firms representing disfavored clients and positions, threatening the right to a zealous defense.
