Death Penalty

NACDL supported efforts to repeal the death penalty in New Hampshire.

Learn More About the Death Penalty

NACDL issued a legislative action alert regarding SB 463, legislation to suspend the imposition of the death penalty until methods exist to ensure that the death penalty cannot be imposed on an innocent person. Unfortunately, this legislation failed to pass.

In both 2018 (SB 593) and 2019 (HB 455), the New Hampshire House and Senate passed legislation to abolish the death penalty. Each time Governor Christopher Sununu vetoed the legislation. In 2019, the legislature successfully voted to override the Governor’s veto. However, due to the lack of retroactivity, one person remains on New Hampshire’s death row.
