Learn More About the Death Penalty
In February 2018, NACDL issued a series of legislative action alerts urging Washington members and advocates to contact their elected officials in support of SB 6052, legislation to abolish the death penalty. The Washington Senate passed the bill, 26-22. The bill successfully advanced from the House Judiciary Committee but was not unable to be considered by the full House prior to adjournment. This is the furthest that death penalty repeal legislation has advanced in Washington.
In October 2018, the Washington State Supreme Court unanimously declared the state’s death penalty unconstitutional.
