NACDL advocated for the passage of The Child Interrogation Protection Act (SB 53), legislation to strengthen due process rights for children. The legislation prohibits a law enforcement officer from conducting a custodial interrogation of a child until the child has consulted with an attorney and the officer has provided notice to the child’s parents or guardian. On April 8, 2022, Governor Larry Hogan vetoed SB 53. The next day, the Maryland Legislature voted to override the governor's veto. The Child Interrogation Protection Act goes into effect October 1, 2022.
