NACDL has engaged in legislative advocacy to stop the use of face surveillance technology in Massachusetts.

Since at least 2006, the Massachusetts state government has been using face surveillance technology without any legislative authorization or oversight.

In 2019, NACDL joined the Press Pause on Surveillance Campaign to endorse S.1385 and H.1538, which would have made it unlawful for state government or state officials to acquire, possess, access, or use any biometric surveillance system, as well as information derived from such systems, without express authorization from the legislature.
