In 2016, NACDL issued an action alert to its members regarding HB 777, a bill that would have criminalized smoking marijuana in public places. At the time, current law in Maryland imposed up to a $500 civil fine for smoking marijuana in public. The legislation would have made it a misdemeanor offense. The legislation passed out of the House but failed to advance in the Senate.
