In 2022, the Delaware State Legislature considered HB 380, legislation to establish a Public Attorney Student Loan Reypayment Program for attorneys employed by the State of Delaware who are providing critically needed to services to the state's most vulnerable individuals. By providing a mechanism to help public defense attorneys repay their student loans, the bill aims to improve both recruitment and retention of skilled attorneys who are committed to providing effective and zealous representation to those who are accused of crimes. The bill was signed into law on October 24, 2022.
