Juror Compensation Explicitly Addressed State Law

Alaska Code Sec. 47.30.905. Fees and expenses for judicial proceedings.

(a) The witnesses, expert witnesses, and the jury in commitment proceedings under AS 47.30.660 — 47.30.915 are entitled to the fees, compensation, and mileage established by the administrative rules of court for other jurors and witnesses. Compensation, mileage, fees, transportation expenses for a respondent, and other expenses arising from evaluation and commitment proceedings shall be audited and allowed by the superior court of the judicial district in which the proceedings are held. To the extent that services of a peace officer are used to carry out the provisions of AS 47.30.660 — 47.30.915, the officer is entitled to fees and actual expenses from the same source and in the same manner as for the officer’s other official duties.

You will be paid $25 per day, starting with the second day you report to the courthouse during your period of jury service. There is no payment for the first day you are summoned to the courthouse. 

Exception: State employees are not paid for jury service (unless they serve on days they are not scheduled to work for the state). You will also be reimbursed for mileage (at the rate paid to state employees) if you live more than 30 miles from the court. Alaska Code Sec. 09.20.037. Protection for employee on jury duty.

(a) An employer may not deprive an employee of employment or threaten, coerce, or penalize an employee because the employee receives or responds to a summons for jury service, serves as a juror, or attends court for prospective jury service. This section does not require an employer to pay wages to an employee for time spent on jury service or in court for prospective jury service.

(b) If an employer violates this section, the employee may bring a civil action to recover wages lost as a result of the violation, other damages that resulted from the violation, and may also seek an order requiring the reinstatement of the employee.
