Mount Vernon, KY, Lawyer Jerry J. Cox Installed as Treasurer of Nation's Criminal Defense Bar

Washington, DC (Aug. 18, 2016) – Mount Vernon, KY, lawyer Jerry J. Cox was sworn in as Treasurer of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the Association's 59th Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, FL, on August 13. Cox has previously served the Association as its President as well as Chairman of the Audit Committee, and he was a member of both the Investment Committee and Long Range Planning Committee.

Cox is the owner and sole practitioner of Jerry J. Cox, PSC, based in Mount Vernon, KY, where he has been practicing criminal defense law for over 40 years. Throughout his career, Cox has published and lectured extensively on criminal law issues. He has served on the faculty of the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy's (DPA) Trial Practice Institute for many years, and in 2002 DPA recognized Cox's commitment to criminal defense by awarding him the Nelson Mandela Lifetime Achievement Award.  

Cox served on the Kentucky Criminal Justice Council's Drug Strategy Committee, is chair of the Public Advocacy Commission, and served as president of the Kentucky Bar Foundation. Cox is certified as a Criminal Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA) and, in 2004, he served on the NBTA Board of Examiners. He is also Past President of the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a member of the Kentucky Bar Association (KBA). He has served on the KBA's: Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, Criminal Rules Committee, Legislative Committee, and Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, and he has chaired the KBA's Criminal Law Section. In 2004, he received the President's Special Service Award from the Kentucky Bar Association, and received their Distinguished Lawyer of the Year Award in 2014.

In 2009, Cox received NACDL's President's Commendation for outstanding service to the goals and objectives of the criminal defense bar and for outstanding service in fighting for the rights of all persons. Cox has been AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell since 1985 and was recognized in the March 2010 issue of Louisville Magazine as being selected by his peers as a Top Lawyer. Cox received his Bachelor's degree from Berea College, and his J.D. from the University of Kentucky College of Law.

    Nation’s Defense Bar Reiterates Opposition to Actions Against Law Firms – Washington, DC (March 18, 2025) – The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) remains deeply concerned over recent executive orders targeting law firms, most recently Paul Weiss and Perkins Coie, and repeats its call to uphold the right to counsel and the independence of the legal profession. Despite a ruling blocking the action against Perkins Coie, the administration has continued to target law firms representing disfavored clients and positions, threatening the right to a zealous defense.
