Hawaii’s laws are quite unique in that they protect American citizens while also protecting the sanctity of Hawaiian culture as it stood prior to its Statehood in 1959. The Kingdom of Hawaii was a sovereign entity codifying laws that specifically protected abortions to save the life of the woman. For example, in 1850, the Penal Code of the Hawaiian Kingdom addressed abortion.
